Our Musical Roots

Our Musical Roots

Our music draws from the rich traditions of multiple Brazilian regions, each contributing distinct rhythmic styles and cultural heritage to our performances.

This map illustrates a small selection of the many diverse music styles present within each region. We play music inspired by Forró, Maracatú, Samba Reggae, and Samba.

We also play original pieces written by our musical director, which draw on a number of traditional Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian rhythms authentically adapted to samba instruments.

Map of Brazil with the five geopolitical regions illustrated in different colours. Each Region lists some of the music styles found there. Forró, Maracatú, and Samba Reggae are highlighted in the top right section. Samba is highlighted in the middle right section.

Pernambuco - The Heartbeat of the Northeast

From this region comes the powerful pulse of Maracatú, an ancient Afro-Brazilian rhythm celebrated for its robust drumming that tells stories of history and resilience. We also draw from the infectious Forró tradition – a captivating blend of African, Portuguese, and Native American influences that embodies the communal spirit of Brazil’s Northeast.

Bahia - Sacred Rhythms and Street Celebration

Bahia contributes Samba Reggae with its deep African heritage and the profound influence of the Orixás – powerful spirits honoured through music and dance. Our repertoire captures both the vibrant street rhythms of Carnival and the sacred ancestral energy of Candomblé traditions.

Rio de Janeiro - The Birthplace of Samba

From Brazil’s most famous musical capital, we perform authentic Samba – the lively, syncopated rhythms that define Carnival and embody the very spirit of Brazil.
